Sophie Calle "Talking to strangers" | Louisiana Museum, Copenhagen | 23 Juin 2010 - 26 septembre 2010

23 Juin 2010 - 26 septembre 2010
With photographs, texts and video installations as her primary materials Sophie Calle creates fictions that lie close to reality. Often this involves an exploration of the boundaries between the private and the public with unconventional and very courageous, personal methods that stimulate the imagination of the viewer and challenge accepted rules for the integrity of the individual. It is typical of the artist’s method that she stages the work so physically comprehensively and precisely that it offers itself as sensed reality, full of emotions, psychology and more or less fictionalized auto¬biography. The exhibition at Louisiana shows a number of the artist’s central works; works that play with our perception of reality, mix the private with the collective, often involve journalism, anthropology or psychoanalysis and take their point of departure in literature, the travel diary or the photo-novel. This is also the case with the exhibition’s main work, Take Care of Yourself, which was one of the high points of the Venice Biennale in 2007, where it was France’s contribution to the national pavilion. For this work Calle invited a large number of career women – from the ballet dancer to the lawyer – to apply their various professional skills to the personal interpretation of an e-mail where the artist’s lover breaks off their relationship. The women’s reactions are poetic, touching and humorous statements that together form a monumental installation. The exhibition also shows a number of the artist’s other works from 1979-2009, including The Sleepers, 1979, where the artist for a period lends her own bed to both acquaintances and strangers to photograph them while asleep, as well as the work Couldn’t Capture Death, 2007, where the artist follows her mother’s last minutes on film. CatalogueIn connection with the exhibition the English catalogue Sophie Calle: The Reader, published by Whitechapel Gallery in 2009, will be available for sale in the Louisiana Shop. The book is an anthology of central texts about the artist from 1983 to 2009 by a number of acknowledged international critics, curators and art historians, as for example Jean Baudrillard, Yve-Alain Bois, Helle Brøns and Robert Storr. The article Introduction: Talking to Strangers by Iwona Blazwick, director of Whitechapel Gallery, also appears in Danish in the upcoming issue of Louisiana Magasin. The article provides a thorough introduction to Calle’s activities and the works shown in the exhibition

Louisiana Museum, Copenhagen
